SAMCOM FPCN30A Specifications and Review

The SAMCOM FPCN30A is a UHF handheld two-way radio designed for business and commercial use. FCC-certified under Part 90 for professional land mobile radio service, it targets warehouses, construction sites, schools, and event management operations that need reliable short-range communication without the complexity or cost of professional-grade systems from manufacturers like Motorola or Kenwood.

Frequency Range and Licensing

The FPCN30A operates across the UHF land mobile band from 406.1 MHz to 470 MHz. This range covers several heavily used service allocations:

  • GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service): 462 MHz and 467 MHz channels
  • Business/commercial land mobile: 450-470 MHz (requires FCC Part 90 licence in the US; Industry Canada ISED licence in Canada)
  • Public safety interoperability channels: portions of 453-454 MHz and 458-459 MHz

Important: The FPCN30A is FCC Part 90 certified, not Part 95 (FRS/GMRS). In the United States, operation requires a valid FCC licence for the specific frequencies programmed. In Canada, an ISED radio licence is required for business-band operation. The radio ships with factory-programmed frequencies that users are unlikely to be licensed for — reprogramming to licensed frequencies is strongly recommended before deployment.

The radio is not certified for amateur radio (FCC Part 97) use.

Channel Programming

The FPCN30A supports 20 channels, each fully programmable via PC software. Each channel can be configured with:

  • Individual TX and RX frequencies (enabling split-frequency repeater operation)
  • CTCSS tone (50 options)
  • CDCSS digital code (104 options)
  • Power level (high or low)
  • Scrambler on/off per channel

Programming software is available free from samcom-radios.com and supports Windows only. CHIRP, the popular open-source radio programming application, is not compatible with the FPCN30A. The programming workflow differs from most radios — rather than reading existing channel data from the radio, users configure channels in the software and upload to the radio directly.

Repeater operation is supported by programming separate TX and RX frequencies on a single channel, though the software requires some manual overriding to prevent it from matching TX to RX automatically.

Group Call Function

The FPCN30A’s most distinctive feature is its dedicated Group Call button, labelled in green on the front panel. When pressed, it acts as a PTT transmitting on a pre-programmed group channel, regardless of which channel the radio is currently monitoring.

This allows a coordinator or supervisor to broadcast to all radios across an entire deployment simultaneously, even when different teams are operating on different channels. A radio on channel 3 will still receive a group call transmission even though it is not set to the group channel. This is equivalent to a one-to-all page function without requiring a dedicated dispatch system.

The group channel is configured during programming and defaults to channel 8 from the factory.

Power Output

SAMCOM rates the FPCN30A at 5 watts on high power. Independent testing measured approximately 3.5 watts at the antenna using the stock antenna as a load, though other users have measured 5 watts or higher using a dummy load. The difference reflects how power is measured rather than a defect in the radio.

At 5 watts into an efficient antenna, realistic communication ranges are:

  • Urban/obstructed (buildings, walls): 1 to 2 miles
  • Suburban/partially obstructed: 3 to 5 miles
  • Open terrain, line of sight: up to 10 to 15 miles

Range figures assume direct radio-to-radio communication. Operation through a repeater extends range significantly beyond these figures.

Power can be switched between high (5W) and low (2W) per channel through programming, or manually on some firmware versions by holding a side button and pressing the up arrow.

Accessories and Compatibility

The FPCN30A uses the standard 2-pin K-type connector found on Baofeng radios, giving it access to a wide range of compatible accessories:

  • Surveillance earpieces and acoustic tube headsets
  • Speaker microphones with PTT
  • Bluetooth earpieces (via 2-pin dongle)
  • Replacement antennas (stubby, standard, extended)
  • Multi-unit gang chargers (6-way available from SAMCOM)

Battery form factor is also compatible with some Baofeng battery packs, making replacement batteries inexpensive and easy to source.

What the FPCN30A Is Suited For

The radio is well-matched to business deployments where:

  • Users have no radio experience and need push-to-talk simplicity
  • A coordinator needs to broadcast to all radios simultaneously
  • Budget constraints rule out Motorola or Kenwood business systems
  • Accessories need to be cheap and widely available
  • Programming needs to be manageable without specialised dealer software

It is less suitable for users who need more than 20 channels, require CHIRP compatibility, or need a display that is clearly legible in bright outdoor conditions.
